Our Story

The word AKAR means “root” in the Indonesian language. And just like roots providing stability, strength and lifeforce to beings, we aim to provide the same solid and reliable base for your growth and experience.

AKAR has been designed and built to serve as a space for absolutely any kind of retreat. No other sanctuary on the island of Bali allows for the same level of customization and flexibility. And we consider it our mission to provide any talented, curios individual with a welcoming space and fully support their vision.

We consider ourselves lucky to be living and working on this island and we encourage all our guests to fully immerse in the culture of Bali and Indonesia. Our rooms are named after the different islands of Indonesia. Their interior follows the key elements of each of these islands along with detailed explanations on each of the decorative items.

To many visitors it comes as a surprise to see how diverse the cultures, ethnic backgrounds and everyday living of these dispersed islands are. At AKAR we provide a snapshot of these diversities with our handcrafted interior items, collected and individually sourced from each of the islands. Feel the multi-ethnic and cultural touch that makes Indonesia so special and unique.

The team of AKAR are experts when it comes to Bali. We have spent decades building a reliable network of service providers and partners and we have a vast list of experiences available that will make your time on Bali truly authentic. All you need to do is ask.

And of course, what would it all be without the beauty of the Indian Ocean within immediate reach? Which is why built AKAR within a 5-minute walk from the most famous surf spots of Bali, and all the main attractions of Canggu. And while we are located centrally, we are still tucked away in a quiet alley so our guests can enjoy the nature and tranquil beauty of Bali.

Where is AKAR?

Located 45 mins from Denpasar International Airport, AKAR is located in the heart of vibrant Canggu, just a stroll away from famous Nelayan Beach. Conveniently located in a quiet street next to Canggu’s Batu Bolong’s main street, AKAR allows you to access by foot all the restaurants and shops Canggu has on offer.

Canggu is a laid back resort village on the south coast of the Indonesian island of Bali. Travellers from all over the world come here to enjoy the vibrant vibe, for foodies and healthy beach life. It’s surrounded by terraced rice paddies and well known for beaches like Bewara and Echo beach, with surf for all levels.

Canggu’s location is ideal for exploring Bali. Only a 30 min drive away, Seminyak offers high-end shops and restaurants. Just south of Seminyak, the beachside town of Kuta. North of Canggu, Tanah Lot is a Hindu temple that sits just offshore on a rocky outcrop.
And if you wish to take it further, you can even hire a driver from Canggu and explore beautiful lush green Ubud (one hour drive) for the day.

Canggu is well known for its fantastic restaurants and stylish cafes. From AKAR you will have access by foot to all of the cuisines and shops Canggu has to offer.

You cannot be in Canggu without jumping on a board, or at least, hanging at the beach. Just a stroll away from beautiful Nelayan Beach and Oldman Beach, AKAR is the perfect location for all your retreats and group escapes, with a lot of surf spots and beautiful beaches around. Lay down on the beach, soak up some sun and enjoy a colourful balinese sunset.
